Anambra Assembly Appeals To Captain Of Industries To Cushion Effect Of Economic Hardship On Work Force

Anambra State House of Assembly appeals to captain of Industries and private establishments to as a matter urgency, emulate the palliative measures of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and effect same in the private sector to cushion the effect of economic hardship on the work force.

Chief sponsor of the motion, Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Sylvester Ofodeme in his submission stated that the continuous rise in the cost of living in Nigeria has reduced the purchasing power of an average worker in Anambra State.

Hon. Ofodome who is the member representing Ekwusigo constituency maintained that the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria has further worsen the condition of an average worker in the State by 

further increasing the cost of petro with consequential increase in price of commodities.

According to the Majority Leader “Most workers in the private sector of Anambra State can hardly meet their basic needs.

“The salaries of most private sector workers in Anambra State could not meet up-with their basic needs in the face of all these economic challenges without palliative measures to cushion the effect.

“This situation has made many workers in the State to resort to various ethical and unethical means to survive while giving room to cooperate begging at work place.

” A consequential palliative measures will enable private sector workers in the Anambra state to adjust to the prevailing economic situation thereby improving productivity”. Ofodeme submitted

Supporting the motion, Hon. Patrick Udoba, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, Hon. Kingsley Udemezue, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Jude Akpua, Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye, Hon. Jude Umennajigo and Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu in their seperate submission appealled to captains of industries and private establishments to assist in  reducing the hardship currently faced by ndi Anambra.

According to the lawmakers “The cost of living has gone up but the wages and salaries of workers is still the same. The sufferings of our people needs to be looked into. 

“All we are saying is encouraging the well-to-do persons in Anambra who are blessed by God to look down on those ones who are not capable of feeding themselves and children.

” Its a clarion call for help through food stuff, medication, payment of school fees, healthcare facilities and services amongst other means. 

” Things will eventually improve with time but until then, let those who can assist, do so through charity. 

” Financial education, management and training is needed by workers so as to maximize excess spending”. The legislators said

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze on his part commended Hon. Ikenna Sylvester Ofodeme for moving the motion. 

Udeze advised Captains of industries to register their staff into the ‘Health Insurance Scheme’ which will enable them to cut down expenses in there hospital and health management.

The house setting was adjurned to Wednesday October 4th 2023.
