Anambra assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the commissioner for environment, commandant Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra State (OCHA BRIGADE), Managing Director, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) and MD Anambra Physical Planning Board, to enforce the construction of covered catchment pits by all landlord, developers and industries to control theĀ effect of flooding in the state.

Majority leader Hon. Ikenna slyvester Ofodeme who is the chief sponsor of the motion, at plenary, stated that section twenty of the 1999 constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria as amended stipulated that the protection and improvement of the environment is the fundamental objective of government.
According to Hon. Ofodeme who is the member representing Ekwusigo constituency, the effect of flooding occasioned by havy rainful includes the destruction of roads, houses and farmland.
” Duo to the loss of soil and farmland in Anambra state, the environment is prone to erosion manace and negative effects to farm production.Ā
“Most community has commence the construction of catchment pits in order to checkmate flooding.Ā
” The construction catchment pit by all landlord in the state will help to checkmate the effect of flooding on our environment and public infrastructure in the state.Ā
” This is one of the easiest way to manage erosion. More than sixty percent of compounds have garman floors and when it rains, waters move to the roads’. The Majority Leader lamented.
Speaking in support of the motion, Hon. Golden iloh, Hon. Emma Nwafor, Hon. Jude Umennajiego, Hon. Obi Nweke, Hon. Tony Moubuike, Hon. Chidiebere Ibemeka, Hon. Barnard Udemezue and Hon. Fred Ezenwa called for strict enforcement in order to save our environment.
The lawmakers stressed that everybody involved should comply and should not leave development to government alone.Ā
Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, the Speaker while commending the Majority Leader for the motion also emphasized on the importance of catchment pits.
