Anambra Assembly Pass ‘Oil Producing Area’s Development Commission Bill’ Into Law

A bill for a law to establish Anambra State Oil and Gas Producing Area’s Development Commission (ANSOPADEC) bill and for related matters has been passed into law on Tuesday at plenary.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
after considering the report of the joint committee on Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and committee on Environment on ANSOPADEC bill, the Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme moved a motion for the third reading and was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Nobel Igwe.

Anambra Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze appreciated the lawmakers in making sure that the law was passed. The Speaker said the law will come into force from the 27th of June 2024.

ANN recalled that recently, the Anambra State House of Assembly expressed worry over unwholesome practices carried out by a company exploring crude oil and gas at Ogwuikpele community in Ogbaru local government area of the state.

This follows a report submitted by the Committee on Petroleum and Mineral Resources chaired Hon. Chidi Ibemeka.

The House called on the Executive Arm of Government to formally forward a petition to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission outlining the company’s non-compliance with various aspects of the Petroleum Industry Act.

The house adjurned and to reconvene on Wednesday 29th May.
