Anambra Bans Assignment Scribbling in Textbooks—’Stop Waste, Start Reusability’

Anambra State Government has banned students from writing assignments directly into textbooks, calling the practice “wasteful and unsustainable.” The measure is designed to promote reusability and ease financial burdens for families.

Announcing the directive at a capacity-building workshop for private school administrators and teachers, State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, emphasized the need for inclusive and equitable learning materials. The ban aims to ensure that textbooks remain usable for younger siblings advancing through school.

This policy forms part of a broader state strategy to make education more accessible by tackling unnecessary expenses. Prof. Chuma-Udeh urged strict compliance, warning that the government would “not tolerate non-compliance,” and encouraged stakeholders to report defaulters to the Ministry of Education.

In tandem, the state also announced a crackdown on graduation ceremonies for early school levels—particularly in nursery and primary classes—which have increasingly been seen as financial burdens on parents fueled by school-driven rituals.
