A bill for a law to provide for the management, protection and sustainability of the environment in Anambra state and for connected purposes has scaled through first and second reading at plenary on Wednesday.
ANN reports that Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Jude Akpua through order 14, rule 74:1 of the house order, seek the permission of the assembly to proceed with the second reading of the bill.

Leading the debate, Hon. Akpua who is the member representing Njikoka two constituency emphasized on the need for ndi Anambra to manage their environment properly in order to avoid road deterioration. He called for catchments to be built at compounds in order to curb erosion.
In their separate submissions, Chairman house committee on Environment Hon. Fred Ezenwa (Onitsha South One), Hon. Patrick Okafor (Onitsha North two), Hon. Golden Ilo (Ihiala two) and Hon. Nobel Igwe (Ogbaru), spoke in favor of the bill
” Healthy environment is very important and if we dont project our environment, alot of things will go wrong.
” This bill if passed into law, will impact positively in our environment.
“The objective of this bill is to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for all residents in the state and to enable citizens access various public amenities both residential, educational and recreational including culture and economic purposes”. The lawmakers stated.
Anambra assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze refered the bill to the house committee on environment chaired by Hon. Fred Ezenwa and house committee on judiciary and justice chaired by Hon. Patrick Okafor.
The Speaker urged both committees to report back to the house in one month.
The house was adjourned to Tuesday December 5th 2023.
