…lists causes of road crashes
The Corps Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, Joyce Alexander has listed human, mechanical and environmental factors responsible for road crashes especially in the State.
Comd. Alexander while speaking during the training of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra Chapter at Godwin Ezeimo International Press Centre, Awka, mentioned such human factors as over speeding, defensive driving, tiredness, making or answering phone calls, ouse of alcohol, drinkibg while driving, over confidence which doesn’t consider safety, and unmindful attitude towards use of seat belt.
According to the Corps Commander, human factor accounts for 80 percent of road crashes. She observed that mechanical factor includes distraction, wiper checks, observation of lighting system, disobedience to traffic codes, lack of head lamp checks, non-maintenance of vehicles, ignorance of trekking space, neglect of morning parade for water and oil level checks.
The FRSC pointed out that “a vehicle must be fit before hitting the road. Which means it must always have spare parts like valid documents, functional wipers, tyres,clear mirror, etc.”
” The Mechanic Factor include crossing potholes and driving under rainfall to avoid collapsed bridges. She called on drivers to ensure they always control their emotions, as failure to control same is likely to cause problem, adding “driving thrills, but kills.”
The Corps Chief observed that the key role of FRSC is to ensure safety on the road and reduction of percentage of accidence by 10 percent each until the 50 percent reduction set by the world transport regulatory body is achieved by 2030. She stressed the establishment needs effective partnership of members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to succeed.
