Anambra Govt Urges Residents To Plant Trees In Order To Mitigate Climate Change, Erosion

Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu has called on Ndi Anambra to plant trees within their households to mitigate climate change and erosion in the state.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that Odimegwu made the call during  the flag-off of tree planting exercise by Senatorch Limited at Amazon Housing Estate, Enugwu-Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area. 

The Commissioner noted that Senatorch Ltd the developers of the estate has complemented Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts of creating green zones and arresting over 1000 active erosion sites in the state by planting trees inside the estate.

Odimegwu disclosed that the state Government distributed over one million trees to about 130, 000 households last year to mitigate effects of climate change, build a clean and green environment as well as arrest erosion ravaging parts of the State.

He maintained that tree planting will ensure sustainable environment by mitigating erosion and flooding and commended Senatorch Limited for building an estate with the touch of nature.

On his part, the Managing Director of Senatorch Limited, Mr Chidi Amaeze explained that their vision is to recreate the Amazon in Brazil a densely populated vegetation filled with many untapped trees in Anambra State.

He informed the gathering that they have decided to embrace Governor Soludo’s vision of planting four million trees in Anambra State within four years by planting three thousand organically grown trees and flowers inside the Amazon Estate since trees help human life through emission of oxygen and to arrest erosion within the neighbourhood.

He noted that the exercise will also improve the aesthetics of the estate and make them the first private estate to develop the idea of green zone in the state.

In his remarks, the Transition Committee Chairman of Njikoka Local government area, Chief Clems Aguiyi expressed joy that the move is in line with Anambra State Government policy to have clean, green and sustainable Anambra state and urged other estate developers to emulate them 

In their reactions, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Foster Ihejofor and the Managing Director of Anambra State Fishery and Aquaculture Business Development Agency, Mr Emeka Iloghalu highlighted the economic and health benefits of trees and called on Ndi Anambra to join hands with Governor Soludo to preserve green environment so that Anambra will be recognised for longevity.
