The International Family Foundation (IFF) has identified poor parenting as a critical factor contributing to moral decadence in Nigeria.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that this position was made known during its annual South Eastern convention held at the Beautiful Gate Hotel in Awka over the weekend.
Speaking on the theme “Moral Decadence in the Society: The Role of the Family”, Engr. Onyebuchi Onwuteaka, Assistant Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), emphasized that poor parenting has severe consequences, encompassing a lack of discipline and responsibility, inadequate guidance and support, poor role modeling, ineffective communication, emotional instability, academic underachievement, and social mal-adjustment.
According to Onwuteaka, moral decadence has reached an alarming level, with its effects manifesting in all aspects of life. He emphasized the need for parents to adopt good and godly parenting practices, passing on the positive values inherited from their forebears to their children.
Onwuteaka urged religious institutions to revert to traditional teaching and preaching methods that emphasize moral values, and educational institutions to focus on foundational moral teachings that can have a positive impact on society.
The International Family Foundation (IFF) National President and Professor of Physical Chemistry at C Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Prof. Emeka Oguzie, represented by Amb. Onyekwere Geoffrey expressed dismay that parents have fallen short in offering their children the essential guidance and support required for their healthy development and maturation.
Chief Host and Anambra State Coordinator of the Foundation, Hon. Obinna Okolo, set the tone for the convention in his opening remarks, highlighting its objective, to provide a platform for exploring the significance of family values in building a society characterized by morality, ethics, and compassion.
The event drew attendees from all Southern Eastern states, with representatives present from each state.
