Anambra Lawmakers Calls For Compulsory Orientation, Verification, Certification Of Healthcare Facilities

The Anambra State House of Assembly  calls on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Health to as a matter of urgency, cause a compulsory orientation, verification and certification of healthcare facilities in the State and ensure strict compliance with medical protocols so as to forestall the occurrence of medical negligence and prescription of fake drug in private owned Health facilities in Anambra State.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the sponsor of the motion, Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu, member representing Nnewi South one constituency in his submission  stated that the critical nature of healthcare demands, a good number of which ranges from Childbirth delivery, treatment of serious injuries sustained from accidents, caesarean section and other major surgeries like organ transplants to mention but a few.

According to Hon. Atuchukwu, the above listed healthcare demands require urgent attention from qualified and competent healthcare practitioners skillfully trained within the required area of specialty.

“The unwholesome practice by some healthcare practitioners who undertake treatment in areas not within their specialty as well as the rogue practice of fake/non-licenced medical practitoners.

” The regrettable losses that occur from medical negligence most of which necessitate to death or permanent incapacitation of the unsuspecting patient involved.

” This unhealthy practice arising from medical negligence negates the constitutionally guaranteed Right to Life as enshrined in Section 33 of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

” An urgent verification and certification of healthcare practitioners within the State has become imperative in the pursuit of preserving and protecting the sanctity of 

human life which is a paramount objective of every good government as provided for in Section 14(2) b of the 1999 Constitution as aforementioned.

” I commend Governor Soludo on his giant strides in the health sector and the recruitments going on.

” In the past few months, we have lost persons from my constituents because of negligence. Hon. Atuchuckwu narrated. 

” Quacks establish health centers without going through duo process with uncondusive environment. 

Supporting the motion, Hon. Golden Iloh (Ihiala two), Nobel Igwe (Ogbaru one), 

Minority Leader Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi (Nnewi South two), Hon. Anthony Muobike (Aguata two), Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme (Ekwusigo), 

Hon. Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha two)

Hon. Emmanuel Okpalaeke (Aguata one) and Hon. Obi Nweke ( Anambra East) calls for urgent checks on heathcare services within the state

” This is a life saving motion aimed at regulating quack practices. Some of this persons are only intreasted in making money without considering what people are going through.

” We need to restore Anambra state. The health sector is very important which is why Governor Soludo increased its budget size”. 

Anambra Assembly Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Okoye who presided the sitting, commended Hon. Atuchukwu for sponsoring the motion.

Rt. Hon. Okoye stated that health is wealth and that as lawmakers, the 8th assembly will do everything within its powers to end quackery in the health sector. 

Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu while speaking in an interview after plenary added by saying that the standard of healthcare services in Anambra need to be of high quality. 

“Constant verification will improve the health sector and will bring back trust and confidence from the people”. The lawmaker said. 

The house adjourned to Thursday Febuary 29, 2024.
