Commuters and motorists on Saturday groaned in frustration as they were stranded in a gridlock on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Anambra State.
It was learnt that the heavy traffic started around the Amanator axis of the busy road following a broken down tanker which succumbed to the worsening condition of the road.
The Amanator lane of the road had long been overtaken by refuse over the years, thereby causing motorists coming from the Oba section of the road to make an interchange at that point.
But due to the broken-down tanker which covered the interchange area, motorists en route to Owerri and Upper Iweka were stranded while passengers who could not withstand the gridlock resorted to trekking.
Our correspondent observed that some commercial buses and tricycles drove against traffic, thereby complicating the congestion.
No traffic official from the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Anambra State Transportation Management or the police were seen on the ground as of the time of filing the report.
