The Anambra State Task Force on Human Trafficking has reinforced its campaign against child abuse and human trafficking with an awareness outreach at Community Secondary School, Agulu-Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the sensitisation programme, themed “Human Trafficking and Abuse,” was organised in response to a recent incident involving alleged physical assault of a student by her aunt, which the school authorities promptly reported the matter, prompting swift intervention by the Task Force.
Reacting, officials commended the school management for taking decisive action, describing the report as a strong indication that advocacy efforts across the state are beginning to produce tangible results.
They noted that increased vigilance and timely reporting remain critical tools in protecting vulnerable children.
During the interactive session, Task Force member, Yohanna Rachel enlightened students on the concept of human trafficking, the strategies commonly deployed by traffickers, and key warning signs of abuse.
She also outlined situations that may suggest a child is living under threat and provided guidance on practical steps to take when confronted with violence or intimidation.
Rachel urged students not to remain silent in the face of abuse, emphasising that speaking up can save lives and prevent further victimisation.
“You have the right to feel safe at home, in school and anywhere you find yourself. If anyone hurts you, threatens you or makes you uncomfortable, report immediately using the contacts provided. Your voice can protect you and others,” she said.
To strengthen reporting channels, dedicated phone lines were shared with students, with assurances of confidentiality and prompt response.
Teachers and students expressed appreciation for the engagement, pledging to share the knowledge gained to help curb trafficking and abuse within their communities.
