The Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has commenced the process of domesticating the National Health Promotion Strategy Framework to strengthen health promotion and improve healthy living among residents.
The exercise began with the validation of the State Health Promotion Strategic Implementation Plan at a one-day workshop held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Best Western Hotel, Awka.
Speaking at the workshop, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, stressed the importance of the Health Promotion Unit in educating residents on healthy living and disease prevention.
Dr. Obidike said the unit plays a critical role in promoting healthy lifestyles by providing residents with accurate information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
He noted that health promotion goes beyond the treatment of diseases, stressing the need to educate people on preventive measures and healthy practices that can help reduce the burden of illness.
The Commissioner called for stronger collaboration among government ministries, departments and agencies, development partners, communities and other stakeholders to ensure that health promotion messages reach all segments of the population, particularly underserved communities.
The workshop, supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), brought together government officials, development partners and other stakeholders in the health sector.
The exercise followed the validation of the National Health Promotion Strategy Framework in July 2026, with WHO supporting states to domesticate the framework and develop implementation plans tailored to their specific health needs.
The ongoing validation exercise is expected to review the implementation matrix, resource mobilisation strategies and sustainability plans ahead of the finalisation and implementation of the State Health Promotion Strategic Implementation Plan.
