An apparent tornado struck the small city of Scotts Valley, Northern California, on Saturday, flipping cars, damaging property, and sending several people to the hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time, about 30 miles south of San Jose, according to the National Weather Service.
According to ABC News, while no fatalities have been reported, the Scotts Valley Police Department confirmed in a press release that several individuals sustained injuries.
Hon. Alao-Akala, who represents Ogbomoso North, South, and Oriire Federal Constituency, praised the donation, emphasizing its importance in advancing youth representation. “This facility will serve as a hub for innovative ideas, youth-focused legislative activities, and stakeholder engagement, further solidifying the National Assembly’s commitment to empowering Nigeria’s youth,” he stated.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, also commended the initiative, describing the facility as a transformative addition to youth engagement. “This innovative space provides an enabling environment where young people can strategize, discuss national progress, and contribute to youth-oriented legislation,” he said.
Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, lauded the development and expressed hope for its positive impact on youth engagement. “I wish this existed during my time as Speaker. This is a commendable platform for young legislators to deliberate on nation-building issues. I applaud Mr. Seyi Tinubu for this visionary project, which will undoubtedly enhance the legislative process for young parliamentarians,” Gbajabiamila remarked.
Also present at the commissioning were members of the Young Parliamentarians Forum, National Assembly members, and other dignitaries.
“Emergency medical teams are prioritising those most in need of care, and we continue to monitor the situation closely,” the release stated.
Authorities described the damage as “significant,” with images shared on social media showing overturned vehicles scattered across roadways and a shopping centre car park.
The National Weather Service verified the tornado based on photos, videos, radar data, and eyewitness accounts. A survey team is set to examine the affected areas to determine the tornado’s strength.
Tornadoes are a relatively rare occurrence in California, which averages about 11 annually, primarily in the spring and autumn.
Earlier on Saturday, the weather service issued a tornado warning for San Francisco amid a powerful storm that caused widespread power outages. The warning was lifted after about 20 minutes.
