Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after players celebrated their semi-final victory over England by displaying a banner asserting sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
The reigning champions came from behind to win 2-1 in Atlanta, with late goals securing a place in Sunday’s final against Spain. Following the whistle, several players held up a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”).
The Falkland Islands remain a point of contention between Britain and Argentina, leading to the 1982 war. FIFA has previously sanctioned Argentina for similar displays, fining the federation in 2014 over an identical banner.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had earlier stressed that football and politics should remain separate. “The reality is that this is a football match. I can’t mix things up,” he said before the game.
The incident occurred under heightened security due to historical tensions. Argentina’s vice-president Victoria Villarruel posted supportive messages on social media, further highlighting the political undertones. FIFA is expected to review the matter.
