- I am crazy of football. I do not only watch it, I play it with great excitement.
Thus, world cups are usually exciting moments for me. When I remember the passion, the perseverance, the discipline and battles. The victories and loses, my spirit is made to come alive. Though, Nigeria won’t be playing in playing in Qatar 2022 but I still look forward to the games with great excitement.
However, the thoughts of 2022 World Cup that would soon commence leaves me bothered with a troubling question. My question is mainly directed to the so called world superpowers, especially the presidents of the United of America and Russia.
It is indeed beautiful that the world can be united by a small round leather material that is inflated by air. Nations will be gathered in Qatar to kick this round-shaped object and attention would be on it for the next four weeks.
It is therefore surprising that the world cannot gather in goodwill to stop the ongoing Russian/ Ukrainian war that has resulted in the senseless destruction of human lives and properties.
Many children have become orphans, while several parents are now childless. People’s sources of livelihood have been destroyed and the future of their children turned bleak.
The people who were once free in their homeland have now become refugees in other countries. In the face of these tragedies, the world is warming up for football. How does that sound? Crazy, right? Yes, it sounds crazy.
Why can’t the world also gather to find a solution to problem of war and peace through genuine mutual dialogue and understanding for the good of all, especially to bring an end to the war in Ukraine?
A world in which war is allowed to linger and even fanned to flame despite the pain, hardship, destruction and death it brings upon others is an insensitive world! It is a world that has lost its sense of religion and humanity.
I understand what is at stake in Ukraine is human ego but I honestly wish the world would unite and put their pride aside to also ensure through rational diplomacy “peace between Russia and Ukraine. This will be a landmark achievement and the time to do it is now.
