ASUU laments over wrongful dismissal, harassment of members in Nigerian varsities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the victimisation, intimidation, and harassment of its members across several public universities.

In a statement issued by the Kano Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Prof. Abdulkadir Mohammad, on Saturday, the union expressed concerns about the deteriorating conditions faced by university staff.

Mohammad highlighted instances of wrongful dismissals and the failure to adhere to due process in universities like Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), and Ebonyi State University (EBSU).

According to him, the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) are also involved in these acts of victimisation.

Citing the dismissal of 120 ASUU members at KSU since 2017, Mohammad said these lecturers were unjustly sacked for demanding improved working conditions.

He also referenced the illegal termination of ASUU-LASU officials in 2017 and 2019 for advocating due process and transparency in promotions.

ASUU has vowed to explore all legal means to secure the reinstatement of these dismissed lecturers. Mohammad urged university administrations and governing councils to respect staff rights, address the backlog of unpaid salaries, and reverse wrongful dismissals.

He concluded by calling for an end to the dehumanisation and violation of the rights of university lecturers.
