ASWAMA Set To End Unlawful Waste Management Practice, Recounts Government Intervention On Onitsha Incident

The Governing Board of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) has reiterated its stand to totally eradicate all forms of human rights abuse and unlawful waste management practices in line with the vision of the Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to build a Clean, Green, livable, sustainable and prosperous homeland.

This resolve was reached during an emergency board meeting held at the ASWAMA Head Office in Awka.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the Board Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Ezenwanji stated that the meeting was convened to set the record straight concerning the incident involving a former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Akaneme Okechukwu and Salitz International Ventures, a pay direct contractor with the agency.

He stressed that the rather unfortunate incident sadly led to the hospitalization of the victim at Enugu which subsequently warranted the State Government to send the Commissioner for Heath and the ASWAMA MD to visit the victim at Enugu to ascertain the real situation and to also empathize with the family.

The Board frowned at the incident and reiterated that the Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration expresses zero tolerance to any form of human rights abuse and affirmed the governor’s vow to protect the rights and privileges of every citizen of the state.

Professor Ezenwanji also reaffirmed the suspension of the contractor, which, according to him, is to allow full fledged investigation and assured that such an ugly incident would not be allowed to repeat itself.

The ASWAMA MD, Mr. Ozoemena Mike also confirmed the incident and state of wellbeing of the victim at the Enugu Hospital and noted that Governor Soludo is intentional about the life and well-being of every Anambra citizen and vowed not to tolerate such inhumane actions by waste contractors henceforth.

He maintained that the suspension of the contractor by the State Government on the 18th of November was to create room for proper police investigation into the matter before any subsequent action will be followed.

Mr. Ozoemena further assured that the state government is doing everything within her powers to alleviate further suffering on the victim’s family as a result of the incident.

Other board members present at the meeting included Prince Chris Azor, Prof Ike Uzochukwu, , Mr. Osita Nkachukwu(SSA), Chief Emeka Aghasili, and the board Secretary, Barrister Iffiorah Chidozie.
