Barcelona will challenge a €602 fine imposed by the Spanish football federation over alleged improper contact with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez during the summer transfer window, the club has confirmed.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) ruled that Barcelona committed a “minor infraction” under its disciplinary code following a complaint from Atletico Madrid. The Madrid club accused Barcelona executives of holding prohibited negotiations with Alvarez while he remained under contract.
Despite the modest size of the penalty, Barcelona insists it will appeal, arguing that accepting the fine would amount to an admission of wrongdoing. The Catalan club maintains its actions complied with regulations.
Barcelona said it submitted a formal transfer proposal to Atletico and received no response. Club officials contend that the lack of reply did not prevent them from assessing the feasibility of a deal, particularly after the player had indicated interest in moving to Barcelona.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo had taken a firm public stance during the transfer window. “There has been, and will be, no negotiation regarding the transfer of Julian Álvarez,” Cerezo said at the time.
Alvarez later apologised to Atletico supporters after scoring against Deportivo La Coruna, acknowledging that his earlier comments about a possible move to Barcelona had upset fans.
“It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry too. Especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived,” the Argentina international said.
The dispute arose as Barcelona sought a high-profile forward following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Communication between the two clubs broke down completely, with Atletico determined to block any move to a direct rival.
