Bauchi Shuts 25 Cattle Markets Over Banditry Concerns

Bauchi State have ordered the immediate closure of 25 cattle markets across the state in response to rising insecurity and bandit activities that have disrupted normal trading and heightened fears among livestock dealers.

The directive, issued on Tuesday by the state government, affects major markets including those in Bauchi, Toro, Ningi, Alkaleri and Misau Local Government Areas.

The Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Ibrahim Kashim, explained that the closure was necessary to protect lives and property and to prevent criminals from using the markets as cover for their operations.

“The decision was taken after careful assessment of the security situation. The markets were becoming soft targets for bandits and other criminal elements,” Kashim said.

He added that the markets would remain closed until normalcy is restored and adequate security measures are put in place.

The closure has caused concern among traders and herders who rely on the markets for their livelihood, but officials insist the measure is temporary and aimed at safeguarding the population.

Security agencies have been directed to intensify patrols around the affected areas to deter further criminal activity.
