Brazil: Massive Police Raid in Rio Leaves At Least 60 Dead, No Confirmation of “LatAm Intl” Link

A sweeping police operation across several favelas in Rio de Janeiro has resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people, including four police officers, multiple arrests, and the seizure of heavy weaponry, authorities said.

The raid, targeting the notorious Red Command drug gang in the Alemão and Penha complexes, escalated into fierce gunfights and tactical deployment of armoured vehicles and helicopters. The operation has been described as one of Rio’s deadliest anti-crime efforts to date.

Governor Cláudio Castro labelled the offensive as an act against “narcoterrorism”, stating:

“We will remain steadfast in the fight against organised crime.”

The bodies of fallen officers and victims were transported to local hospitals. Meanwhile, 81 suspects were reported arrested, and 75 rifles along with other heavy arms were seized during the raid.

While a headline on CNN hinted at a connection with “LatAm Intl” — perhaps referencing the airport or airlines — journalists and authorities have not confirmed any link between the air transport sector and the operation.

The dramatic crackdown has sparked urgent calls from human rights groups for transparent investigations into the conduct of security forces, particularly over the proportional use of force and civilian safety in densely populated urban zones.
