Peter Obi, a runner-up in the 2023 presidential race, has switched allegiance from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress, vowing to spearhead a coalition against vote-rigging in the upcoming 2027 elections.90ccdb
The former Anambra state governor unveiled his defection during a public address in southeastern Enugu state on Wednesday, framing it as a strategic pivot to unite opposition forces and address Nigeria’s entrenched challenges.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey. We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” Obi declared.
He emphasized that the shift was not rooted in “personal ambition but about the future of the country,” underscoring the vital role of “credible elections” in bolstering Nigeria’s democracy and progress.
Obi’s move comes less than three years after his high-profile campaign under the Labour Party banner, where he garnered widespread youth support but finished third in a contest marred by disputes over results.
The ADC, backed by a coalition of smaller parties, positions itself as a platform for reform, and Obi’s entry could reshape alliances in Africa’s most populous nation as it grapples with economic woes and security issues.
