Rafael Leão has been handed Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt for Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, following Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the national team camp amid an escalating dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, according to UEFA website.
A symbolic handover
The revised Portugal squad list issued ahead of the Copenhagen fixture lists Leão, formerly No. 17, as the new No. 7 — the number Ronaldo has worn for Portugal throughout his storied international career.
Bench role sparks exit
The shirt change comes after Ronaldo was left out entirely against Denmark, two days after he was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway. Jesus had described that decision as tactical rather than punitive.
“It wasn’t the right moment to bring Ronaldo into the game; it was a tactical choice,” Jesus told reporters after the Norway match, adding that Ronaldo remained part of his plans. “Perhaps he’ll play against Denmark.”
That assurance did not hold. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Ronaldo left Portugal’s Copenhagen base on Wednesday shortly after Jesus had told the media the striker would take part in that day’s training session.
Coach denies feud, captain promises answers
Jesus pushed back on talk of a rift, insisting the relationship with his captain remained intact.
“There is absolutely no issue,” Jesus said at a press conference, adding that he had told Ronaldo directly he would not feature against either Norway or Denmark.

Ronaldo, for his part, took to social media to say he would in time reveal “the truth about the reasons” behind his exit. Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença reportedly altered his travel plans to meet with Jesus and Ronaldo in Denmark, underscoring the federation’s concern over the fallout.
A changing of the guard
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 146 goals and the nation’s most-capped player with 234 appearances. He started and played 67 minutes in last week’s 1-0 win over Wales but has now been dropped from the matchday squad entirely for Denmark.
With Ronaldo absent, Portugal — top of Group A4 with six points from two matches — will field a side bearing a new symbolic marker of transition: Leão in the No. 7 shirt once synonymous with their captain.
