Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of up-and-coming singer Destiny Boy, authorities said Monday, as investigations into the 22-year-old’s passing continue amid widespread speculation.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the detention, announcing that the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s homicide unit for further probing.
“The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy,” police spokeswoman Babaseyi Oluseyi said in a statement.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing,” she added.
News of the musician’s death emerged Sunday when videos surfaced online showing his body being transported to a morgue, with cotton wool visible in his nostrils and ears, fueling grief and questions among fans.
An unidentified associate later addressed the rumors in a video, insisting the artist had been dealing with an undisclosed illness.
“God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. May God rest his soul,” the associate said.
“Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” he continued.
Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy gained fame for blending Fuji music with contemporary styles, starting his career as a backup dancer for veteran artist Pasuma. He shot to prominence in 2019 with a Fuji remix of Davido’s hit “If,” followed by covers of tracks by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor.
His original releases included “Lamba,” “One Transaction,” “Gbese,” “Billion Dollar,” “Mio Gbonkankan” and “Lowkey.” In November 2024, he and his partner Iremide welcomed their first child.
Police have promised updates as the inquiry progresses, but no further details on the suspect or the exact cause of death were immediately available.
