BREAKING: Tension As LP Accuses Otti, NLC of Backing “Aggressive Takeover” of Nat’l Secretariat

  • Amid allegations of orchestrated violence and political treachery, the party vows to fiercely defend its headquarters against a looming power grab.

The Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning against what it describes as a planned “invasion” of its National Secretariat, allegedly being orchestrated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with “hired thugs” and internal “factions.”

In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the LP claims the plot is being “covertly bankrolled” by the Abia State Government, under Governor Alex Otti, and “one other prominent leader” of the party.

According to the statement, intelligence reaching the LP leadership indicates that the “illegal” Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC) and the National Transition Committee (NTC) are mobilizing for an “aggressive takeover” of the party’s headquarters in Abuja, starting Monday, April 7, 2025.

“Their plan is simple: break in, cart away sensitive documents, and vandalize our property,” the statement reads. “This is nothing short of political thuggery cloaked in unionism.”

The LP accused the NLC—a body “legally barred” from engaging in “partisan politics”—of repeated interference in the party’s internal affairs, calling their latest move a “gross violation” of the Supreme Court ruling delivered on April 5, which emphasized the need for “internal party resolution” in leadership matters.

Reaffirming the legitimacy of Barrister Julius Abure as the “National Chairman,” elected during the March 2024 convention, the party vowed to “resist” any forceful attempt to “usurp” its leadership.

Calling for urgent intervention, the LP urged “security agencies,” including the Police and DSS, to act swiftly and decisively to prevent what it described as an impending “breach of peace” in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“This madness must be stopped before it spirals into full-blown anarchy. We expect those behind this attempted coup—no matter how highly placed—to be brought to ‘justice’,” the statement concluded.

As tensions rise, all eyes now turn to Abuja and the evolving dynamics within the Labour Party, as political fireworks threaten to disrupt its already fragile “unity.”
