Comedian Broda Shaggi has spoken publicly for the first time about the stray bullet that hit him on March 9, saying he spent months in hospital unsure whether he would perform again.
The skit maker, whose real name is Samuel Animashaun Perry, gave a detailed interview on his YouTube channel on Wednesday. He said the shooting happened after a brand activation event, as he and his team left the location near the Sango-Ota bridge area.
“I heard a loud bang”
“We were done shooting and got stuck in traffic. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang and everywhere went silent. I could see people talking, but I couldn’t hear anything. Then I touched my hip, saw blood, I got to know I had been hit by a stray bullet,” he said.
Shaggi said he lost consciousness soon afterwards and prayed throughout the journey to hospital. “I was totally unconscious till I got to the hospital. All that was in my mind was just to survive, I didn’t want to die,” he said.
Moved between hospitals
He was first taken to a hospital in the Alakuko area of Lagos, where staff tried to cut off his clothes to find the wound. “They took me to another hospital because they said they didn’t have enough equipment to handle me. I was sweating,” he said.
He was then moved to a facility in the Government Residential Area of Ikeja, where he was rushed into the emergency room. “We got to the other hospital, they were swift, put me in the emergency room. By that time, my mind was settled that I was going to make it through this moment,” he said.
Months of recovery
The comedian said he stayed in hospital for months and could not move his leg. “I was hospitalized for months, and I felt so useless. I would see my colleagues post skits and burst into tears because I wasn’t sure I would ever be able to do it again. I was scared people would have forgotten me by the time I returned,” he said.
He called March 9 “a day in my life I wished never happened”. He titled his comeback video “The Second Chance”, thanked God for his survival and promised fans new projects.
