Anambra State Ministry of Environment on Monday appeared before joint committees of Finance and Appropriation chaired by Hon. Ejike Okechukwu and Committee on Environment headed by Hon. Frederick Ezenwa
Commissioner for Environment Anambra state, Engineer Felix Odimegwu assured the committees that their will be an improvement in their performance and productivity in the coming year 2024.
Engr. Odimegwu while speaking at the budget defense and bilateral discuss outlined the plans of the ministry, stating that privention measures will be applied in order to curb the manace of erosion.Â
The commissioner revealed that toilet and its facilities will be provided at major markets in the state with a proposal of about 100 million needed to execute the projects.Â
“This is to help in ensuring healthy and hygienic environment in the entire state and fight against open defecation.
“More public awearness will be done and improved sensitization by making sure that ndi Anambra takes ownership of their environment and issues of water ways will be tackled.
Managing Director Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Mr. Mike Ozoemena while speaking stated that the major source of revenue for the agency is subvention from government.
Mr. Ozoemena revealed that the organization cannot function effectively without funding and that money is needed to clear debts, buy diesel and pay salaries.Â
Managing Director Ocha Brigade, Mr Celestine Anere while answering questions from the lawmakers at the defense identified shortage of man power as one of its challenges. He revealed that the agency needs operational kids in order to improve productivity stating that their is soo much enforcement to be done. The MD assured that more efforts will be made in the coming year in other to achieve the vision of Governor Soludo.
Speaking after the defense in an interview with house of assembly correspondents, Engineer Odimegwu added by saying that the budget reflects the agander of Governor Chukwuma Soludo which is to create a livable and prosperous Anambra state.
“The Governor wants to make Anambra a destination land and not depature and environment is key because it determins if investors will come in.Â
“Their is an increase in the budget of the ministry of environment and their will be massive sensitization and projects next year (2024).
“Environment is everybodies business and sustainability of it should also involve the people.Â
There will be more focus on sewage, erosion sites, tree plating and grassing, urban regeneration amongst other projects next year.
“We are working hard to give Anambra state a face lift in terms of beauty through making it green and clearner.Â
” There is a remarkable change on flooding and erosion showing that the solution is here. It is delebrate and international’. Odimegwu stated.
