The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Saturday ruled that Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is cleared to play in the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs final against the Democratic Republic of Congo, dispelling fears of a suspension after his recent booking.
The decision was announced via the Nigerian team’s official X account, stating: “CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo.”
It added: “Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.”
Ndidi, the Leicester City star, picked up a yellow card in the sixth minute of Nigeria’s 4-1 extra-time triumph over Gabon on Thursday — his second caution in the qualifiers — prompting initial concerns over his availability for the decider at Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The ruling ensures the Super Eagles, aiming for a seventh World Cup appearance, can field their key enforcer in a match that could propel them to the intercontinental playoffs next March, as Africa’s ninth qualifier seeks glory in the expanded 48-team tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
