CAF Secretary General Resigns as AFCON 2025 Title Dispute Escalates

The Confederation of African Football has announced the resignation of its Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba amid mounting controversy over the handling of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title awarded to hosts Morocco following Senegal’s walk-off protest in the final.

CAF confirmed the departure in a brief statement on Saturday, describing it as a “personal decision” while the confederation continues to defend its ruling that stripped Senegal of the trophy and awarded it to Morocco on a 3-0 forfeit.

Mosengo-Omba, who had held the post since 2021, did not issue a public comment on his exit. The timing of the resignation has fuelled speculation that internal pressure linked to the Senegal-Morocco dispute played a role, though the confederation insisted the move was unrelated to the title row.

The controversy erupted after Senegal walked off the pitch in protest during the final in Rabat. CAF’s Appeal Board applied Articles 82 and 84 of the tournament regulations to declare the match forfeited, a decision Senegal has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has repeatedly defended the ruling, stating: “The regulations are clear and must be applied equally to all participating nations.”

Senegal’s football federation has described the decision as “manifestly erroneous” and continues to pursue legal recourse, insisting the result achieved on the field should stand. The case remains pending before the CAS.
