Kingsley Chinda, the Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has formally resigned as Minority Leader of House of Representatives following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the resignation and defection during plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers returned from a four-week recess.
In his resignation letter read on the floor, Chinda expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the House,” the letter stated.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to evolve under your leadership and alongside distinguished colleagues in advancing democratic governance and national development,” he added.
Chinda assured he would continue to perform his duties as a member of the House.
The move formally ends weeks of speculation after he participated in the APC governorship primary in Rivers without publicly announcing his defection on the floor.
Chinda, who represents Port Harcourt Constituency II, is now the APC’s candidate for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.
