A certain man of God with good TV visibility recently said concerning the church; “A certain known bishop once told me that the church in Nigeria has spent over 30 years teaching prosperity to the members. But yet, Nigeria still has a record highest number of poor people in the world. I hushed down the bishop to reduce his voice as such statement is bad for business.”
His congregants laughed over this statement but I had the Eureka experience. First, this man and his friend are acknowledging that the church in Nigeria has failed to live up to their claims of making their millions of congregants millionaires over the years. Secondly, they consider running the church a business and are consciously selling their placebo. Finally, they are consciously concealing these facts as according to the bishop, “it is bad for business.”
This is why I am of the candid opinion that beyond getting our political leadership right, we need to make a law that imposes it on churches to convert their bible classes and miracle hours and all the rest of the hullabaloo to engage people on in between fleecing them of their hard earned money under the guise of supporting the “kingdom of God,” to real life problem solving classes and self discovery sessions using SCIENTIFICALLY proven mode of education and mentorship.
I have discovered a nursery/primary school here in Awka that spends over 4 hours every morning engaging their pupils on clapping, singing, binding the devil and suchlike just before they commence the curricular activities proper. To the proprietor/manager of the school, they are glorifying God and building good morals in the kids. But a careful study of the effect of this indoctrinating session on the kids would leave much to be desired.
These kinds of schools are what produced the kind of adults that make up the bulk of the masses; the kind that spends more time appeasing the Gods or their pastor, prophet, brother, imam or religious leader in a bid to attract good fortune. The kind of adults that are more of hypocrites with loose principles who can be swayed by money and are poorly developed in terms of innate potential.
Take China for instance, they engage their kids in hands on creativity development sessions. They task their kids to be problem solvers not supplicators who cannot produce even toothpick. Let us start being the change we wish to see. Less of the prayers, more of the works. Let us make our society work, consciously. Enough of this stupidity.
