Recently, a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, was said to have committed suicide due to the hike in tuition fees of the institution. The Incident occurred on the 22nd of August 2021.
Angel Network News reports that the 200 level student of Industrial Physics Unizik, David Ogbonna, a native of Isuikwuato local government area of Abia State, was found dead in the wardrobe of his hostel room, with a folded cloth tied round his neck.
The incident has left so many questions unanswered. In an interview with the students of the same department with the deceased, many affirmed that regardless of the stress and frustrations faced in school and particularly in the department, people have different ways of handling their problems. Many also attested that, even though most students wear smiling faces every day, you can’t really tell what they are really going through or facing. This is the case for David.
Most of the students interviewed were all skeptical as to what truly happened to David. Some were of the view that David did not commit suicide but was murdered instead.
A student and also a hostel mate of the deceased, stated that, “I don’t think it was suicide. I mean, when you take a good look at the scene when discovered, you will notice that it was staged. Besides the length and width of the wardrobe is not big enough for someone to commit suicide in it. The school authority has said it was suicide but I think they should investigate deeper. There is obviously more to it than what they are saying”.
Most students interviewed also corroborated with this same line of thoughts.
“Even if they said its suicide, I think the school contributes 75% in making such decisions. Am a 300 level student of this school and am also a lady, I know how frustrated I have been in some situations with lecturers who wouldn’t want you to graduate in peace. But that notwithstanding, I won’t stop pushing, my God pass them” a female student said.
David was said to have committed suicide due to the hike in school fees. The mother, Mrs. Esther, in a meeting with the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, debunked the cause of the death as hike in school fees. She further stated that such news is misleading and diversionary. According to Mrs. Esther Ogbonna, David couldn’t have killed himself because of the hike in school fees because we provided everything for him in school.
She also commended the management of Unizik for the steps taken so far, to unravel the mystery behind the death of their son.
The school management and other security agencies are still investigating the death of late David Ogbonna, in other to truly ascertain the true cause of his death and justice served at the end.
