Copa América: Messi Set to Break 71-year-old Record Against Canada

Argentina’s captain is scheduled to start today’s initial Copa América encounter against Canada. In doing so, he will shatter a record set in 1953.

Whatever the outcome of today’s game against Canada, Lionel Messi will make history once more. Argentina and Canada will kick off the 2024 Copa América in Atlanta, and Messi will establish another record in this 48th edition of the tournament.

Messi and Livingstone are tied with 34 Copa América appearances.

Messi now shares the record with famous Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone. Livingstone, nicknamed El Sapo (The Toad) and remembered for being one of the first goalkeepers to wear a short-sleeved shirt, appeared in 34 Copa América matches in seven editions between 1941 and 1953, but he never won the championship. Livingstone’s final game in the South American competition was a 2-2 draw against Bolivia at Lima’s National Stadium on March 28, 2024.
