‘Investing in Musk’s Brain’: Dangote’s SpaceX Remark Comes as Nigerians Buy Into His $1.6bn IPO

Aliko Dangote has shared an investor’s reasoning for putting $15 million into a private SpaceX placement despite the company’s reported $4.6 billion loss in the first quarter.

Dangote recounted a conversation with his friend “Patrick from Geneva”, who questioned the logic behind investing such a large sum in the Elon Musk-led space company following the reported loss.

According to Dangote, Patrick explained that his investment was not primarily about SpaceX’s immediate financial performance but about Musk’s ability to build and develop ambitious technology ventures.

“I’m not investing in SpaceX. I’m investing in Elon Musk’s brain,” Dangote quoted his friend as saying.

When asked whether the strategy justified committing $15 million, Patrick reportedly remained confident about the long-term prospects.

“With $15M? Yes,” he said. “It will be good later.”

Dangote’s statement about Patrick saying, “I’m not investing in SpaceX. I’m investing in Elon Musk’s brain,” can be read as indirectly making the same argument for his own IPO: investors are not merely buying into a refinery; they are betting on Dangote’s ability to build, expand and create value.

And the timing is striking. Today, September 14, 2026, Dangote launched the refinery’s IPO, offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares (₦5,250). The offering is being marketed as a way for ordinary Nigerians to participate in the refinery’s future.

Musk, one of the world’s most prominent technology entrepreneurs, has built SpaceX into a major player in the commercial space industry, with the company developing reusable rockets and satellite-based internet services.

Dangote’s account presents the investment as a bet not simply on SpaceX’s current balance sheet, but on Musk’s vision, technological ambition and ability to turn long-term projects into profitable ventures.
