Datti Challenges Claims of Obi’s Defection, Seeks Proof From LP

Datti Baba-Ahmed, vice-presidential candidate of Nigeria’s Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has disputed reports that Peter Obi has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting the former Anambra governor only spoke about joining a political coalition.

Baba-Ahmed said Obi’s remarks at a recent event in Enugu had been misinterpreted, urging the public and party members to listen carefully to what was said. “It will be good if everyone listens to Peter Obi’s comments at Enugu. He mentioned joining the coalition. I don’t believe I heard him say defection to the ADC,” he said.

He added that he did not hear Obi announce a formal move to the ADC. “I did not hear that; maybe I missed it, but please find out if he said joining the coalition or the ADC,” Baba-Ahmed stated, calling for clarity amid growing speculation.

The former senator also challenged the Labour Party leadership to provide evidence that Obi had completed the formal process required to leave the party. He said any defection would require official documentation, including a resignation letter. Baba-Ahmed asked the party to clarify Obi’s status to avoid confusion among supporters and the wider public.
