Dora Akunyili’s daughter elected as alumni board member of Harvard Kennedy School

Ijeoma Akunyili has been elected as an alumni board member of the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) in the United States.

Alongside eight others from diverse backgrounds and countries, Ijeoma Akunyili was chosen to serve a four-year term starting July 1.

Ijeoma, the first daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, former director-general of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and former Minister of Information, has an esteemed background.

She currently serves as the chief medical officer of the Jersey City Medical Center, part of RWJ Barnabas Health, a role she assumed in January 2023.

The Harvard Kennedy School described its alumni board as comprising 22 volunteer members dedicated to strengthening connections among HKS alumni worldwide.

The board oversees various committees focused on engagement, connections, celebration, recognition, governance, and communications, aiming to enhance alumni relations and support the school’s mission.

Board members commit to attending biannual meetings in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at their own expense, and engaging actively in board work between meetings.

They are also tasked with advancing alumni engagement, advising the dean on alumni perspectives, and supporting school priorities.

As an alumni board member, Ijeoma Akunyili will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of Harvard Kennedy School’s alumni engagement efforts and promoting its global impact.
