The Chairman of Dunukofia Local Government Council, Bar. Chijioke Ozumba has expressed deep sympathy with traders affected by the unfortunate fire outbreak at Umunnachi part of Afor-Igwe Market.
Angel Network News (ANN) gathered that
the incident occured on Saturday night, 13th December, 2025.
In his reaction, the Mayor described the incident as painful and distressing. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to victims who lost goods and means of livelihood in the inferno, and assured them that the Dunukofia Local Government Council stands in solidarity with them at this difficult time.
The Mayor also commended the efforts of Anambra State Fire Service and community members who worked tirelessly to contain the situation and prevent further losses.
Bar. Ozumba further called on traders to adopt enhanced safety measures within the market, particularly with regard to fire prevention, while pledging to work with relevant authorities to strengthen safety standards and emergency preparedness in markets across the local government.
The local government boss prayed for quick recovery for the victims and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare, safety, and economic wellbeing of the people of Dunukofia LGA.
Ozumba immediately dispatched a strong delegation comprising top council officials including; the Secretary to the Local Government Council, the Leader of Dunukofia Congress of Councillors, Supervisor for Youth and Sports Development, Supervisor for Agriculture, immediatepast Transition Committee Chairman of Dunukofia Local Government Council and others, to the market to assess the level of damage, commiserate with the victims, and gather first-hand information that will guide possible intervention and support.
The delegation interacted with market leaders and affected traders, urging them to remain calm while assuring them that their plight has received the full attention of the Mayor and the council.
