EU Outlines Roadmap For Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Transition

The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in achieving sustainable renewable energy, urging the country to implement clear policy frameworks and invest more in clean energy infrastructure to meet its long-term development goals.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on Nigeria’s energy transition, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, said the bloc remains a “reliable partner” in Nigeria’s pursuit of affordable and sustainable power.

“For Nigeria to achieve a sustainable renewable energy future, there must be an enabling environment that supports private investment and technology innovation,” Isopi said.

She noted that renewable energy has become essential for addressing climate change and powering economic growth, particularly in underserved communities across the country.

According to her, Nigeria’s renewable energy potential — including solar, hydro, and wind — remains largely untapped, but the EU’s ongoing collaboration through initiatives such as the Global Gateway Strategy and Team Europe Projects aims to close that gap.

The EU delegation emphasized that sustainable energy access is central to Nigeria’s industrialization agenda, adding that transparency in governance, public-private partnerships, and regional cooperation will determine the success of its green energy shift.

The bloc further reiterated its pledge to mobilize financing and technical expertise to help Nigeria meet its energy targets under the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
