Ex-APGA Presidential Candidate Umeadi Withdraws From Partisan Politics

Justice Prof. Peter Umeadi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has announced his resignation from the party and withdrawal from partisan politics in Nigeria.

In a letter dated October 24, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of APGA Ward 1, Nri, Umeadi declared:

“I respectfully write to resign from my membership of Nri Ward 1, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). By the same token, I withdraw from all partisan politics in Nigeria.”

He expressed gratitude to APGA for the opportunity to contest the presidential election and stated that his decision takes effect immediately.

A former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Umeadi made history by becoming the first jurist and legal academic to contest Nigeria’s presidency under a major party. He had joined APGA in 2019 and clinched its presidential ticket in 2022.

Umeadi’s campaign emphasised the values of rule of law, separation of powers, and due process, which he described as fundamental to national renewal.

The exit of a figure with such legal and political credentials may reshape ideological alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, especially within Nigeria’s intellectual and reformist circles.
