Fan Urges Yul Edochie to Drop ‘Juju Roles’, Reclaim Nollywood Stardom

A passionate supporter of Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has publicly appealed to the star to abandon ritual-themed films and return to mainstream romantic and dramatic roles, claiming the constant portrayal of “babalawo and fetish priest” characters is stalling his once-soaring career.

In a viral open letter circulating on social media, the fan, identified only as @RealChukwudi, wrote: “Uncle Yul, with all due respect, please stop these juju movies. You are bigger than always playing native doctor. We miss the Yul of ‘The Mirror’ and ‘Royal Maid’. Your talent is wasting in these village ritual films. Come back to the big productions, sir!”

The plea has sparked thousands of reactions, with many agreeing that Edochie’s recent filmography (heavily tilted toward low-budget, direct-to-YouTube titles featuring occult themes) has distanced him from major cinema releases and brand endorsements he once commanded.

One commenter noted: “He used to be the face of Glo, Peak Milk, now he’s only trending for village priest roles and personal drama. Very sad.”

Edochie, 43, has not responded directly but posted a cryptic Bible verse on Instagram hours later: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Psalm 118:22).

Industry insiders say the actor’s pivot to self-produced content came after his 2022 polygamy announcement and subsequent fallout with first wife May Edochie, which cost him several lucrative contracts. His YouTube channel, however, boasts over 400,000 subscribers and generates revenue from the very ritual movies now under fire.

Nollywood director Kunle Afolayan weighed in subtly on X: “Talent is not the problem. Choices are.”
