Fed Govt to train 15,000 out-of-school children this month, says presidential aide

The Federal Government has said 15,000 out-of-school children across the country will benefit from its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme to make them self-employed and self-reliant.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Education Intervention, Mr. Fela Bank-Olemoh, announced this yesterday in Kaduna.

The presidential aide was in the state to interface with Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other stakeholders.

He said at least 2,000 pupils in Kaduna State will be among the beneficiaries of the project which will start this month.

Bank-Olemoh said the project is part of Federal Government’s core interventions to lift at least 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by Year 2030.

He said the programme was approved by the National Steering Committee on National Poverty Reduction With Growth Strategy (NPRGS) to run from August till December across seven states: Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Enugu, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Gombe.

The President’s aide said more than 2,000 beneficiaries would be selected from Kaduna State for the training which will have about 16 skills deployed across the states.

Bank-Olemoh promised that the programme would be scaled up next year to cover over 1 million persons.

Governor El-Rufai, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, described the project as laudable and timely, especially to Kaduna, which is among the states in the pilot phase that will run from August to December 2022.

El-Rufai said Kaduna State had done appreciably well in its Human Capital Development policy.

The governor said his administration had initiated series of programmes to provide economic empowerment for youths and women, promote private investments and give the state the needed infrastructure to sustain vibrant socio-economic activities.

He said: “In our effort to equip our youths with the 21st century skills and talents and thus make them employable, we have conducted a Skills Gap Assessment of practitioners in five priority areas and NEEDS Assessment of existing training centres in the state, all in collaboration with Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

“We have also developed a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) strategy that proposes the establishment of three TVET centres (one in each senatorial district), in line with the President’s directive to institutionalise full TVET system with boarding facilities in the state.”
