FG Suspends WAEC, NECO Fee Hike After Public Backlash

The Federal Government has suspended a proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination and National Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination following widespread public concerns.

In a statement on Monday, the Ministry of Education announced the withdrawal of the June 18 letter conveying the adjustment to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders. The proposed hike would have raised fees from N27,500 to N50,000, an 82 percent increase.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, has directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policymaking,” the ministry said.

The review was prompted by rising costs of conducting examinations, including logistics, security, printing and technology. However, the government prioritised students’ welfare and equitable access to education in response to feedback.

Further consultations will involve examination bodies, state ministries, parents and other partners before any decision. The ministry pledged to keep the public informed.
