Flooding: NRCS gives grants to 4,912 Kaduna households

The Nigerian Red Cross Society has concluded the disbursement of N35, 000 each to no fewer than 4,912 households in Kaduna State to assist them to prepare for flooding.

The Secretary General of NRCS, Abubakar Kende, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, adding that the beneficiaries were identified in six communities from three flood-prone local government areas, namely Kaduna South, Kaduna North and Chikun.

He noted that the six communities: Narayi, Kabala West, Bachma, Kigo Extension, Nasarawa, and Romi, are close to the River Kaduna which the Nigerian Metrological Agency has predicted may overflow due to heavy rains.

Kende said, “The Nigerian Red Cross Society has concluded the disbursement of N35,000 to 4,912 households each in Kaduna State to enable them to prepare for flood.

“The beneficiaries were identified in six communities from three flood-prone local government areas, namely Kaduna South, Kaduna North and Chikun in Kaduna State to enable them prepare for flood.

“Flooding is not an unforeseen occurrence, there are usually early warning signs but most people choose to ignore them because of lack of resources to take action. This project helps people to plan, prepare and prevent devastation, which is better than responding when the disaster has already struck.”

The Director, Disaster Management, Mr Benson Agbro, was quoted as saying that the social protection project will minimise the risks of predicted disasters.
