Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

According to PUNCH, Anyim announced his defection during the APC Local Government election campaign’s Grand Finale at Pa Oruta Ngele Township in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, on Saturday.

Anyim’s defection was accompanied by several high-profile politicians from various parties, including former state and National Assembly members, former Labour Party governorship candidate Edwin Nkwegu, and Senator Obinna Ọgba.

These figures, along with thousands of their supporters, have now pledged their allegiance to the APC.

The ceremony saw key APC figures in attendance to welcome the new members. Among them were APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Progressive Governors Forum Chairman Governor Hope Uzodinma, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Minister of Works David Umahi, and State Chairman Stanley Meghan.

Minister of Works David Umahi lauded Anyim for his consistent support during the 2023 elections, stating it was fitting for him to join the APC officially. Umahi recounted his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support during his own legal challenges after joining the APC.

Umahi reflected on the difficulties he faced when switching to the APC but noted the party’s rising appeal in Ebonyi and the broader South-East region. He highlighted federal projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, which will pass through Ebonyi, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to regional development.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State underscored the importance of the recent Supreme Court ruling in reinforcing democracy in Nigeria. He urged young people to avoid protesting against President Tinubu’s government.

Anyim, in his address, pledged unwavering support to the APC leadership, emphasizing that Ebonyi has always been unified under a single political banner.

He attributed this unity to Governor Francis Nwifuru’s successful leadership and efforts to consolidate various groups within the state. Anyim affirmed the people have resolved to support the APC in appreciation of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s performance and efforts at uniting all groups in the state.
