Fourth-tier Fleetwood stun Arsenal on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

  • Fourth-tier Fleetwood are through to the quarter finals after beating Arsenal on penalties in an historic night for the Cods.

League Two side Fleetwood Town produced one of the biggest upsets in Carabao Cup history on Tuesday, eliminating Premier League Champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the hosts a shock lead in the 20th minute with a left-footed finish from the left side of the box, assisted by Harrison Neal.

Arsenal equalised four minutes into the second half when Viktor Gyokeres scored from close range.

The Gunners were reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute after Max Dowman was sent off for violent conduct.

Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch made several important saves to force the contest into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Fleetwood converted all five of their attempts. Conor Haughey scored the decisive penalty, while Arsenal’s Bruno Guimaraes had his effort saved by Lynch.

The result sends the Cods into the quarter-finals and marks a historic night for the fourth-tier club.
