…Leads Joint Road Audit at Agulu Lake
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command has reaffirmed its commitment to ending recurring crashes at the Agulu Lake black spot in Aniocha Local Government Area, following four consecutive accidents that claimed eleven lives within one month.
The Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, led a joint road audit at the troubled location, bringing together representatives of the Anambra State Road Traffic Maintenance Agency (ARTMA), Anambra State Ministry of Works, Aniocha Local Government Area, members of the State House of Assembly, and community leaders.
During the inspection, the team identified key infrastructure gaps and structural defects contributing to the frequent crashes. As interim measures, temporary barricades were recommended to immediately reduce risks while long-term engineering solutions are being developed.
Speaking at the site, Sector Commander Asekhauno condemned reckless driving and poor adherence to traffic regulations, stressing that both human error and road design flaws must be urgently addressed to prevent further loss of lives.
ARTMA Director, Mr. Konti Okonkwo, ordered the immediate installation of road furniture, with work commencing promptly to improve visibility and traffic control around the black spot.
In her remarks, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi, representing Aniocha Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, expressed condolences to families of the victims and pledged to collaborate with the state government on redesigning the road and adjoining lake area to enhance safety.
A representative of the Commissioner for Works reaffirmed the Anambra State Government’s commitment to implementing agreed measures, including barricading vulnerable sections and installing rumble strips to slow down speeding vehicles.
Community leaders commended the joint team for its proactive intervention and appreciated the FRSC’s swift emergency responses, expressing hope that the coordinated effort will permanently address the dangerous stretch and restore safety to the area.
