Retired Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Christopher Musa has been officially sworn in as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, succeeding his predecessor in a ceremony at the State House.
Earlier, ANN reported that President Bola Tinubu nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as the new Minister of Defence following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday.
The nomination was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), on Tuesday.
According to a letter sent to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Presidency stated: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence.” The letter also noted that “President Tinubu conveyed General Musa’s nomination as the successor to Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on Monday.”
In his acceptance speech, Musa pledged to “restore dignity and competence” to the defence ministry and vowed to tackle the security challenges plaguing the country with renewed urgency. He added he would prioritise the welfare of military personnel and push for reforms to improve operational efficiency.
The appointment marks a return to government for Musa, whose tenure as CDS was widely regarded for efforts to coordinate inter-service operations.
