World leaders, business executives and international officials gathered in New York to pay tribute to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and recognise his contributions to public service.
World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was among those present and delivered the opening tribute at the event organised by Chinelo Anohu, chief executive of Mutandis Africa.
In a statement on her official social media account, Okonjo-Iweala described the gathering as “a glorious night of tributes to an outstanding leader.”
She said she felt honoured to open the evening of tributes, which featured contributions from several prominent personalities.
Among those in attendance were former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Afreximbank President George Elombi, Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony Elumelu, World Bank Group Managing Director and International Finance Corporation Vice President Makhtar Diop, and Seplat Energy founder Austin Avuru.
Okonjo-Iweala congratulated Anohu on what she called a well-attended event celebrating Obasanjo’s legacy.
