Global Road Safety Week: Alexander Calls For Regular Walking And Cycling

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander, Anambra Sector, Joyce Nnennaya Alexander has called for regular walking and cycling.

Comd. Alexander made the appeal while speaking during the thanksgiving mass at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Amawbia on Sunday, in commomeration of the end of 2025 Global Road Safety Week.

The FRSC boss emphasized on the use of sidewalks by pedestrians, obedience to traffic signals and avoidance of crossing between moving vehicles.

She revealed that the theme for this year’s event ‘Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe’ reminds all of our shared responsibility to protect those who use our roads in the capacity of pedestrians and cyclists.

While applauding Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his giant strides in road construction, Alexander however maintained that every life matters as such, pedestrians and cyclists deserved the same protection as drivers. 

“For healthy lifestyle, walking would promote longevity and such am urging you all to use the pedestrian bridge especially for those plying the Regina/Okpuno axis.

“In a bit to address these challenges, FRSC is actively working with Government

Agencies, communities and Partners to advocate for the inclusion of pedestrians

bridges, sidewalks, zebra crossings and bicycle lanes in road designs and construction projects.

Speaking in an interview, Alexander added by saying that “Global Road Safety Week is marked by the whole country of the United Nations every two years.

” This year, it is focusing on walking and cycling and how to make it safe. Every partner in road safety management need to ensure that walking and cycling is safe.

” Safty is not left in the hands of anybody both as a driver, passenger or pedestrian.

Your safty is your own responsibility. 

” As you cycle or walk. you are promoting your health and exercising every part of the body. Environmental health is also vital.

” If you go to develop country, they have cycling sections on their roads without fear of being knocked down. 

“FRSC is appealing to all state governments, while building roads, should also consider the safty of pedestrians and exposed road users”.

Angel Network News (ANN) gathered that 

the United Nations Global Road Safety Week was first established in 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly as part of efforts to create awareness on the growing incidents of road traffic deaths and injuries. 

It is being jointly coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC), and held biennially.
