Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has named his nephew, music star David “Davido” Adeleke, as Chairman of the newly created Osun Sports Trust Fund, a move the government says aims to mobilize private funding and revitalize the state’s sports sector.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the Osun chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), according to state officials.
Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, stated that Davido accepted the appointment “without hesitation” and expressed confidence that his global influence would help draw investments into sports development.
Adewusi added: “The introduction of a Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development.”
He also confirmed ongoing renovations to the Osogbo Township Stadium, saying the upgrades would meet Olympic standards upon completion.
The administration said it is also moving forward with plans to establish an Osun State Sports Commission to oversee sports policy, development and management statewide.
The appointment has triggered mixed reactions across Osun, with supporters hailing the move as innovative and critics raising concerns about nepotism and governance norms.
