Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has announced the state government’s readiness to empower wives of fallen heroes with 150 lock-up shops and grants to sustain their livelihoods and the children left behind.
Mr Eno made the announcement during the wreath-laying ceremony, commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Uyo on Thursday.
He said the initiative would be accompanied by business grants for the widows to improve their living conditions.
The governor also announced support for members of the Nigerian Legion and other paramilitary forces.
“This annual observance serves as a recognition of the sacrifices rendered by the men and women who laid down their lives for the peace and security of Nigeria,” he said.
Mr Eno called for interreligious tolerance nationwide, emphasising the need for Nigerians to show respect to the country’s service members, as this would inspire them to continue their commendable efforts.
The ceremonial laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier, the 21-gun salute, and the release of doves were significant tributes to the fallen heroes.
